EYE SPY.........?
Dear Family
I hope everyone is well.
Mazal Tov to Pesach and Chani on their upcoming Anniversary next week. Wishing you many more happy ones together.
And on the same day is Mendels birthday (Davidoff). Mazal Tov Mendel, and Shmuly and Devorah Leah!
This weeks Parsha is Shelach, and one of the main themes is about the SPIES which Moshe sent to spy out the Land of Israel prior to entering.
The word for SPYING in Hebrew is yaturu, or taturu depending on the grammar.
The parsha gives a long account of these events whereby the 10 of the 12 spies give a bad report to the People about what they saw, and frightens them off from going into Eretz Yisrael.
And because of this Hashem gives the punishment to wander in the desert for 40 years etc.
But what I found interesting is that at the end of the parsha, the same word taturu comes up again, but is now used in a different context ie DO NOT STRAY AFTER YOUR HEART AND YOUR EYES.
Rashi however explains the connection as follows 'This ie taturu, is similar to spying the land. The heart and eyes are the body's spies, bringing it sins. The eyes see, the heart lusts, and the body sins.'
But the other thing I found very interesting is that in relation to 'straying after the eyes', TZITZIT is juxtaposed (placed next to it) and discussed??!!
Again Rashi explains that the word tzitzit is connected to the word metzitz which means WATCHING. Ie when you see the tzitzis you will remember all the 613 mitzvos ( Rashi explains how tzitzis is connected to 613). - this being the positive side of looking
How intricately are the Hebrew words and Torah intertwined with the Truth!
Wishing everyone a Gut Shabbos and strength to overcome all our challenges with the help of Hashem.
