In this week’s Sedra Behaalotcha, it says in V12:3 that “the man Mosheh was more humble than anyone on the face of the earth”, and I saw an interesting article from Rabbi Eliezer Shemtov on this subject:

The point he makes is that HUMILITY IS A POWERFUL ANTIDOTE TO LOW SELF-ESTEEM!?

When one possesses extraordinary gifts, there are 2 kinds of response

· “ I am greater and more important than others”

This may lead to arrogance, and a feeling of being distanced from those who have less.

· “I was entrusted with something more valuable than others”

This attitude leads to a profound sense of responsibility from oneself, and towards others. And it leads to HUMILITY.

Humility says, don’t compare oneself to others.

Hashem judges not how much one does, but how much effort one puts in, to fulfill one’s own mission. “Am I better today than I was yesterday? Am I performing to my true potential?

And if I encounter someone who seems inferior to me, am I recognizing that perhaps their very constraints make their effort far greater value than mine?”

Keeping this in mind helps us respect every person that we encounter*, including, and especially, ourselves*

Gut Shabbos to all
