In this week’s Sedra Shlach, we learn about Tzitzis (15:39)

Even though Tzitzis are worn by men, the lesson of Tzitzis is for both men and women.

And I saw the following teaching of the Rebbe from Likutei Sichos vol 2 p324-325:

Rashi comments that the Tzitzis (ritual fringes) reminds us of all the Mitzvos, because the numerical value of Tzitzis is 600, plus 8 strings plus 5 knots = 613 (ie the 613 Commandments).

But this is just the fringes.

Why does the Mitzvah also require that we attach the fringe to a garment? It means that there is more to remembering the Mitzvos than a mere total of 613.

Unlike the food that we eat, which becomes absorbed into our flesh and blood, the clothing that we wear is external and separate from our bodies.

Clothing is therefore a metaphor for that which transcends our understanding, and cannot be absorbed by the human mind.

Therefore when fringes extend from a garment, they symbolise that all 613 Mitzvos stem from G-d’s will, which utterly transcends human understanding.

And likewise our commitment to their observance must transcend reason.

Gut Shabbos to all!
